The challenge of Ordinary Time
No spectacular thread to follow: this is the time of faithfulness. The challenge is to avoid both weariness (always the same hymns) and scattering (never the same ones).
A method of balance
- A stable core that the congregation knows by heart (the Ordinary, a few refrains).
- A rotation of secondary hymns that comes back around every 4 to 6 weeks.
- A new piece introduced regularly, but only one at a time, and well prepared.
Following the Sunday Gospel
Let the Word of the day guide your choice: a hymn that resonates with the Gospel turns routine into meditation. Ordinary Time then becomes ground for going deeper, not a desert.
