Make others sing, don't sing in their place
The good song leader steps back behind the congregation. Their gesture, their voice, their gaze invite: they launch, sustain, then let it carry.
A few concrete keys
- Announce the hymn and its number clearly, without chatter.
- Launch in tune and loud enough to carry, then ease off as soon as the congregation holds it.
- The gesture: simple, legible, at eye level, it signals the start and the end.
- The microphone: step away from it as soon as you can, so as not to cover the congregation.
Prepare in advance
A refrain learned 30 seconds before Mass is sung ten times better. Dare to take that brief moment of rehearsal.
