Start small and regular
Six people who rehearse every week are better than twenty who turn up once a month. Regularity is the foundation of everything.
The first steps
- A fixed slot for rehearsal, short but weekly.
- A starter repertoire of 8 to 10 solid hymns, reworked until they are comfortable.
- Two-part singing before four-part polyphony: a simple drone or a third already transforms the sound.
- A near-term goal (a feast, a Mass) to bring people together.
Growing the group
Add difficulty in small touches. Record yourselves: nothing helps you progress like hearing yourself. And nurture the human bond, a choir is first of all a community that prays by singing.
