The Cantiamo Choir's first record, Vivant brings together the earliest hymns Pierre-Arnaud Destremau wrote for the ensemble. The project opens an approach held to ever since: composing an original repertoire for the congregation and the liturgy, then bringing it to concert with a mixed-voice choir.
The album's eighteen pieces span praise (“À toi louange éternelle”), Marian prayer (“Je vous salue Marie”, “Prière Notre Dame du salut”), the invocation of the Spirit (“Veni Sancte Spiritus”) and more intimate texts (“Retrouve ta paix ô mon âme”, “Prière d'abandon”).
The recording took place in November 2021 in Meung-sur-Loire (Loiret), under the composer's direction and with sound engineering by Vicken Khatcherian; the solo parts are carried by Marguerite, Quitterie and Côme. Written for mixed choir SATB, these pieces are made to be taken up: each can live in the parish as much as in concert, well beyond the record.
“My life has been marked by painful and joyful moments. That is where I wrote best.” · Pierre-Arnaud Destremau
